The feed is a column of squares, and the column is 1080 pixels wide on the phone you are looking at it from. A 4032 × 3024 photo from the camera roll, a 2400 × 2400 brand render, or a 1600 × 900 screenshot all become the same-sized tile in the grid — and the difference between a post that reads and one that reads squashed is the one crop decision this page will not make for you. The box is 1080 wide and 1080 tall, exactly, and a non-square source fills it by stretching unless you take the square out first.

This page exists for that square. The dimensions are preset, JPG is the default because social upload forms list it first, and the file lands somewhere between 200 and 900 KB depending on the photo — small enough that every platform's per-post upload limit is a non-issue. A batch of a week's content, cropped to the square in advance, queues up and leaves as one .zip in the order you added it.

Nothing here is sent anywhere: the crop frame, the 1080 mapping and the JPG encode all happen on your device, and the original in your camera roll is the file it was a minute ago, with its location data intact on disk and stripped out of the output.

How it works

Two controls do all the work: the crop (if the source is not square) and the quality slider (if the file is heavier than the form wants).

  1. Add the photo

    Choose it, drag it on or paste with Ctrl+V. A 1080 × 1080 or larger square source is the clean input — the page scales it down with high-quality resampling and nothing about the composition changes. A 4:3 phone shot or a 16:9 screenshot is fine too, but read the crop step below before you generate.

  2. Take the square out of non-square sources

    The 1080 × 1080 box fills both dimensions: a 1600 × 900 render arrives with its height stretched by 120 percent, and a face in it is now an oval. The crop button on the card opens a 1:1 frame — drag it over the subject, the product, the headline — and generate from the cropped region. Skip the crop only when the stretch is invisible: a flat background, a chart, a texture. For a square that crops differently top and bottom, the feed reads the center, so center the part that must be seen.

  3. Generate, glance at the tile, download

    Press Generate images and judge the result at the size the feed will show it — the Compare slider helps, and a 1080 px file on a laptop screen is nearly phone-tile scale already. The card shows 1080 × 1080 and the new weight; save the single file or the .zip for a batch of a week's posts.

Where 1080 × 1080 is the number that matters

The square shows up in a few places with different tolerances:

  • Instagram feed posts: rendered at 1080 px wide in the feed column; uploads up to about 1080 square are accepted, and higher is downscaled server-side — doing it locally keeps the quality decision yours
  • Instagram profile pictures: the avatar slot renders smaller, but the feed and the Explore grid both read a 1080 square; 1080 is the safe master the platforms can shrink from
  • Other platforms' square slots: square image fields across social and marketplace UIs, where 1080 is large enough to stay sharp and small enough to upload fast
  • Reels and short-video first frames: a 1080 square still that fronts a 9:16 clip, sized so the cover matches the feed tile

1080 × 1080 is not 1080 × 1350, and the crop is the whole job

The portrait 4:5 post that reads taller in the feed is a different frame — 1080 wide by 1350 tall — and this page's box is the 1:1 square, which is where the feed tile, the grid view and the avatar column all live. The two are not interchangeable: a 4:5 post cropped to a square loses its top and bottom, a square stretched to 4:5 loses its face shape. If the content has a top and a bottom that both matter — a headline above, a signature below — the 4:5 frame is the right one and the square crop is the wrong tool; if it is a product on a board, a face on a flat background, a texture or a brand moment, the square is exactly the frame the grid will show.

What the file weighs when it lands

A 1080 × 1080 photo at the default quality of 82 usually sits between 300 and 700 KB as a JPG: light enough that no upload form on the internet will blink, heavy enough that a flat-color graphic looks nearly identical at quality 60 and half the size. If the source was a 12 MP phone photo, the resampling to 1080 has already thrown away three of its four pixels — the visible quality of the output is set mostly by the crop, and the quality slider only fine-tunes the last 10 percent of the weight.

  • Photographic content, quality 82 — 300–700 KB, the safe default for a feed upload
  • Graphic or flat-color content, quality 60 — 150–300 KB, nearly indistinguishable from 82
  • A 12 MP source downscaled to 1080 — the pixels decide the sharpness, not the slider; do the crop before you worry about the number
  • PNG on the format bar — 1 to 4 MB for the same photo; use it only if the destination wants lossless or the image carries transparency

What the page does not decide for you

The tool will not tell you which part of a 3:2 photo should be the square, and it will not add a background to fill a non-matching source. Those are the two design calls that belong to you: the crop frame on the card does the first, and the format bar does not do the second — a 4:5 source in this box stretches rather than pads, because padding would put a white band on a post that was designed edge to edge. For the padded version, the crop tool is still the honest route: crop to the square that reads, and accept that top or bottom of the frame is gone.

Frequently asked questions

My photo is 1080 × 1920 (portrait video). How do I get the square cover?

This page's box is 1:1, so a 9:16 source would stretch badly — the right move is the crop button on the card: drag the square frame over the portion of the phone screen that should be the cover, and generate. The 1080 × 1080 result is the feed tile and the reel cover in one file. If you also need the full 1080 × 1920 to upload as the video itself, this page is not the tool for that — the video is a different asset, and only the still cover needs the square.

Why does a 1600 × 900 screenshot come out with squashed text?

Because the box is literal: 1080 × 1080 fills both dimensions, and a 16:9 frame in a 1:1 box is 20 percent taller than it was drawn. Crop the screenshot to the square region that contains the part you are posting (the browser window, the chart, the error message) before you generate — the page cannot know which pixels were the point of the post.

Do I need to resize to 1080 × 1080 at all, or does Instagram downscale it?

Instagram downscales oversized uploads server-side to its display size, so a 4032 px photo survives the round trip at a quality the platform chose — yours is what you see. Cropping to the square and exporting at 1080 locally means the platform's scaler has nothing to do, the weight is 300–700 KB instead of several megabytes, and the composition you chose is exactly the one that lands. The crop is the real job; the 1080 is the honest size to ship.

Can I keep a transparent background in a 1080 square?

Only as PNG or WebP on the format bar — JPG has no alpha, and the transparent corners of a cutout come back filled white. For a product shot on a clear background that will sit on a colored feed tile, PNG at 1080 is the right call; for a photo on a real background, JPG is lighter and the question does not arise.

I post a face. How tight should the 1080 square crop be?

Tight enough that the face occupies roughly half the tile's height, with breathing room above the head — the grid column is narrow, and a head that fills the whole square reads as a close-up rather than a portrait. Zoom the Compare slider out to phone-tile scale before you commit: if the face is lost at that size, the crop is too loose.

Does the file leave my phone or computer?

No. The crop frame, the 1080 mapping and the JPG encode run in your browser on your device, the original in your camera roll is untouched, and nothing in the process is transmitted for processing. The location data the phone wrote into the original is dropped in the output — which is what you want on a post that is not about where you are standing.
