800 × 600 is the frame of a generation. It was the monitor resolution before 1024 × 768 took over, the default slide size in presentation software that predated widescreen, and the image rule on forums, school portals and internal tools that were configured in the 2000s and never reconfigured since. It is still a live number in 2026: a lab's LMS will list 800 × 600 as the maximum upload for a scanned worksheet, a trade-association portal will bounce a 1280 × 720 photo for exceeding it, and an old POS or kiosk screen will display exactly in that frame because it cannot do otherwise.

This page is for that frame. The box is preset at 800 × 600, JPG is preselected because legacy systems list JPG first or only, and the mapping is literal: whatever you drop in, the output is exactly 800 wide and 600 tall. Square sources become letterboxed by stretching, and wide 16:9 photos fill the box by squeezing — the standard reason to crop to 4:3 first is explained below, along with why this size is not the same as the 1920 × 1080 widescreen default most people reach for.

A batch of scanned pages or a set of product shots from a legacy shoot goes through the same box and returns as one .zip in queue order. The work happens on your machine; the scans in your folder are unchanged.

How it works

The box is already set; the one real decision is whether a non-4:3 source should be cropped or filled.

  1. Add the image

    Choose it, drag it on or paste from the clipboard with Ctrl+V. A scan, a slide frame, a phone photo in landscape — anything that will sit in an 800 × 600 slot. A 400 × 300 source is fine as input: the box will scale it to exactly 800 × 600, and yes, that includes enlarging this one case, because the spec is a hard frame, not a ceiling.

  2. Decide crop or fill

    If the source is not 4:3 — and most modern photos are 3:2 or 16:9 — the box fills both dimensions by stretching, which reads as a squashed face or a flattened diagram. Crop to the 4:3 area that matters first: press the crop button on the card, pick a 4:3 frame, drag it over the subject, and the 800 × 600 output then carries that composition. If stretching is acceptable — a chart on a flat background often survives it — skip the crop and let the box do the work.

  3. Generate, check, download

    Press Generate images and open the Compare slider before saving. The output is a small file — a few hundred kilobytes for a photo, less for a diagram — and the dimensions on the card read 800 × 600 exactly. A batch of pages or a set of variants comes back as one .zip, queue order preserved.

Who still asks for 800 × 600 in 2026

The request comes from systems that are not going anywhere, each with its own reason:

  • LMS and school portals: image uploads capped at 800 × 600 to keep the student-view page light on older hardware
  • Forum and community rules: attachments limited to 800 × 600 by a configuration from 2012 that has never been reviewed
  • Kiosk and POS screens: legacy hardware that renders at a fixed native resolution, where the image is not scaled at all
  • Presentation software with a 4:3 deck: one slide sized at 800 × 600 points or pixels in a mixed-format file
  • Government and association portals: the max-image rule is printed in a PDF guide from the pre-HTML5 era

800 × 600 versus 1280 × 720 and 1920 × 1080

All three are 4:3 or 16:9 frames at different scales, and they are not interchangeable. A 1920 × 1080 photo dropped into an 800 × 600 slot is not merely bigger — it is a different aspect ratio, so it either gets cropped to 4:3 (losing the left and right of the frame) or stretched to fit (a 50% vertical squash that no one wants on a face). The 800 × 600 page is for the slot that is exactly 4:3 and exactly 800 wide; for a 1280 × 720 16:9 frame, the 1920 × 1080 page resizes down to it with the ratio intact, no crop needed.

What a stretch onto 4:3 actually does to your photo

A 4032 × 3024 phone photo (about 1.33:1, effectively 4:3) maps cleanly onto 800 × 600 with no visible distortion. A 1920 × 1080 screenshot (16:9) fills the box at 800 × 600 by compressing its height — the text is 67 percent of its original height, and a line that was 10 pixels tall is now 6.7, which at 800 px wide reads as mush. If the content is a diagram or a UI with text, the crop-first path is the correct one: take the 4:3 region of the 16:9 page that holds the relevant part, then let the box scale it.

Why JPG is the default for this frame

The systems that name 800 × 600 as their maximum are the same systems that list JPG as their only allowed format. The PNG path exists on the format bar for the cases where the slot renders on modern web and the file carries hard edges or a transparent background, but for a scanned worksheet in a portal from 2014, JPG at quality 82 is the file that will open on the teacher's 2011 laptop and the one the portal will accept without a second try.

Frequently asked questions

My photo is 1280 × 720. Will it fit in 800 × 600?

It fits the box exactly — 800 × 600 is a hard frame, not a ceiling — but 1280 × 720 is 16:9 and the box is 4:3, so the tool will stretch the pixels to fill both dimensions. The output will be 800 × 600, and it will look vertically compressed. Crop to the 4:3 region that matters, then generate, and the face is no longer an oval.

Is 800 × 600 the same as 720p?

No. 720p is 1280 × 720 — a 16:9 widescreen. 800 × 600 is an older 4:3 monitor resolution. They are different ratios and different use cases: a 720p video frame goes on the 1920 × 1080 page (resized down to 1280 × 720 with the ratio intact); an 800 × 600 slot is a 4:3 image slot in a forum, a portal or a legacy display.

I scanned a worksheet at 2400 × 3200. Can I resize it to 800 × 600?

Yes — that is the classic case for this page: a scan that is too large for a portal's maximum, in the right ratio. The 2400 × 3200 source is 3:4, and a 4:3 box will stretch it slightly; if the worksheet is portrait and the slot is landscape, rotate it to landscape first on Rotate image, then crop to 4:3, then run the 800 × 600 box. The text at 800 px wide is legible on a screen and at normal print sizes.

Can I make a small 400 × 300 image bigger to 800 × 600?

The 800 × 600 box fills both dimensions exactly, so the output will be 800 × 600 — but it is a scale-up of a 400 × 300 source, and the tool does not invent the missing detail. The result is a blurry 800 × 600, which is worse than a crisp 400 × 300 in most legacy slots because the slot scales the smaller file up itself. Only enlarge if the destination forces the exact frame and the 400 × 300 source is the only one you have.

Will my 800 × 600 JPG fit a portal that also lists a 500 KB maximum?

A typical 800 × 600 photo at quality 82 lands in the 80 to 200 KB range — comfortably under 500 KB. A dense 10 MP scan compressed to the frame can be heavier; if the card shows a size over budget, drop the quality to 60 or run the result through the Compress to 500 KB page. The dimensions do not change in either case.

Does the image get uploaded?

No. The decode, the square mapping and the JPG encode happen in your browser on your device; the original file on disk is not touched and nothing in the process leaves the machine to be processed.
