A product photo on a marketplace does two jobs: it is the tile a buyer sees in the grid, and it is the image that opens in the zoom view when they click. Both jobs want the same square, and both jobs want it to be the same square as the neighbor's. A feed of listings where your product is a 4:3 landscape between two 1:1 squares reads as the odd one out — not because the photo is bad, but because the tile is a different shape. 1400 × 1400 is the square that a major marketplace ecosystem's listing guidance uses as its working size, and matching it is the cheapest thing a seller does to look professional.
This page does that one job on a whole shoot. The box is locked at 1400 × 1400, JPG is preselected because listing uploads list it first, and the mapping is literal: every file in the queue comes out exactly 1400 wide and 1400 tall. A square source scales down cleanly; a 4:3 or 16:9 source fills the box by stretching, which is the one reason to crop to 1:1 first — and for a product on a flat board, that is rarely needed, because the shot was framed square already.
The zoom detail is the other reason to do this locally at 1400 rather than letting the platform's scaler choose: a 2400 px source cropped to square and scaled to 1400 in your browser lands with the composition you intended, at a file weight of a few hundred kilobytes that any upload form accepts, and in a state you can re-run against a new lighting setup without re-photographing.

For a product shoot the flow is crop-if-needed, generate, zip — the box and the format are already set.
Add the shoot
Choose the folder's files, drag them on, or paste with Ctrl+V. Square and non-square sources all work; the queue processes them in the order you added them and hands back the .zip in that same order, so a shoot named 01, 02, 03 lands in the delivery folder in the same sequence.
Crop the non-square frames
A 4:3 product shot fills the 1400 box by stretching the product taller — the tile is 1400 × 1400 either way, and the product's proportions are what they become. If the shot is close to square and the stretch is invisible, generate as is. If it is a true landscape, press the crop button on the card, drag the 1:1 frame over the product, and let the box scale the square region. For a consistent shop, every listing should be cropped so the product sits at the same height in the tile — that is a shoot-level call, not a tool setting.
Generate, check one, take the .zip
Press Generate images and open the Compare on the card for one of the shots — the tile is the size a buyer will first see it at, and the product's key detail should read at that scale. The whole batch lands as a single .zip, each file at 1400 × 1400 and a few hundred KB. The originals in your shoot folder are unchanged.
Why 1400 and not 1000 or 2000
1400 sits in the middle of the listing-photography range for a reason. Below about 1000, the zoom view runs out of pixels before the buyer finishes rotating the product in their head; above 2000, the file weight climbs with no visible gain and some upload forms start to care. 1400 is large enough that a macro detail — a stitch, an engraving, a texture — still resolves in the zoom, and small enough that a typical product JPEG lands in the 200 to 600 KB band, which clears every per-file ceiling a marketplace has published.
The tile is the selling surface
A buyer in a marketplace grid is not reading your listing — they are scanning tiles, and the decision to click happens at 100 to 300 pixels on a phone screen. A product that is cropped so its key feature sits in the center of the 1400 square, and that reads in plain light against a background the tile does not fight, wins the click before any description is read. The 1400 box is what makes that crop deliberate: the center of the frame is exactly what the grid will center, so whatever you put in the middle of the square is what the grid shows.

A 4:3 product shot in a 1:1 box, explained honestly
The tool fills both dimensions, and that is the difference between a resize tool and a compositor. A product that is 4:3 on a flat board, stretched to 1:1, is now taller: the board keeps its texture but the product's height has grown by 50 percent. For most product photography that is invisible if the shot had headroom; for a shoe, a bottle or anything with a distinctive silhouette, the stretch reads as wrong. The crop button does the honest version: take the 1:1 region that contains the product in its true proportions, and the box scales that region. In a shoot where consistency matters, crop every frame deliberately rather than treating the stretch as a correction afterwards.
What 1400 does not do
The page resizes to a square; it does not white-out a background, remove a shadow, straighten a tilted board or re-light a flat product. A shot with a busy or angled background still has one after the box is applied — the 1400 frame carries whatever it was given. Those are separate passes: background removal, a crop-and-reframe of the board, a re-shoot. This page is deliberately only the size and shape step, because a shoot that is resized and nothing else is the same shoot at a better size.
Frequently asked questions
My photo is 2400 × 3000 (portrait). Can it go into 1400 × 1400?
Yes — a portrait source maps onto the box by stretching horizontally, the same way a 4:3 shot stretches vertically. For a product, the clean path is the crop button: take the 1:1 region that holds the product in true proportion and let the box scale it. If the product is a tall object on a board, a 1:1 crop usually keeps the whole object and trims the board's left and right — which is how a portrait product shot becomes a marketplace tile.
Why not just upload the 2400 px original and let the marketplace scale it?
The marketplace's scaler chooses what to keep from a non-square frame, and it is not cropping for your composition. A local 1:1 crop plus a 1400 export gives you the square the grid expects, in the exact 200–600 KB weight band that clears upload forms, and the platform's pass over it is a no-op instead of a guess.
I sell ten different items. Do I crop each shot differently?
That is the shoot-level decision this page leaves to you: the product at the same height in every tile, the key feature centered. The tool's job is the size; the consistency is yours, and it is what separates a store that looks designed from one that looks assembled. A white board, a fixed camera height and a square crop are the three habits that do most of the work.
Does a 1400 × 1400 JPG beat a 1400 × 1400 PNG on a listing?
For a photo, yes: PNG at 1400 of a product shot lands in the megabytes and several forms cap per-file weight far below that. JPG at the default quality 82 is 200–600 KB and indistinguishable on a product tile. Switch the format bar to PNG only for a graphic with hard edges and flat colors, or when the destination requires lossless.
The marketplace says up to 12 MB. Is 1400 overkill small?
No — 1400 is the working size the platform's own guidance uses, and a 1400 JPG at a few hundred KB is far under the 12 MB ceiling. The ceiling is a safety net for the odd scan, not the number to aim for: aiming at 12 MB means shipping a file ten times the weight your tile will ever display, on every buyer's connection.
Is the shoot uploaded to make the 1400 versions?
No. The decode, the square mapping and the JPG encode run in your browser on your machine. The shoot folder on disk — the one you archive and re-light from next month — is untouched, and there is no server in the loop to ask of.
