In the Instagram feed, a post is a column about 1080 pixels wide on the phone that shows it, and the platform gives you two photo heights to fill it: a square (1080 tall) or a 4:5 portrait (1350 tall). The taller one wins a quiet argument that most people never notice while scrolling — a 4:5 post claims roughly a third more vertical space than the square next to it, and the finger that would have stopped on the square often stops on yours first. It is the difference in screen time per post, and for a small account it is the difference the algorithm can actually see.
This page exists for that box specifically — not the 1:1 square the avatar and the grid tile use, not the 16:9 widescreen a video wants, and not the 9:16 column that is only legal inside Stories and Reels. It is the ordinary feed post at its maximum allowed size: 1080 wide, 1350 tall, JPG by default because the platform lists it first. A 4032 × 3024 camera frame, a 2000 × 1500 product render, a 1600 × 900 screenshot all become the identical 1080 × 1350 tile, and the file lands between 300 and 800 KB — light enough that the upload form does not blink.
There is a crop decision hiding in every non-4:5 source, and the page does not make it for you: the box fills both dimensions, so a square photo arrives with its top and bottom stretched, and a 16:9 frame stretched in the other direction. The crop button on the card is the honest route — drag the tall frame over the part of the image that must be visible, and the composition that lands is the composition you chose, not one the platform's scaler invented server-side.

Two controls matter: the crop (if the source is not already tall) and the quality slider (if the form has a size ceiling).
Add the photo
Choose it, drag it on, or paste with Ctrl+V. A source at or above 4:5 is the clean input — a 3:2 phone shot, a tall street frame — and it scales down with high-quality resampling while the composition stays exactly as framed. Anything wider than 4:5, from a 1:1 square to a 16:9 render, still works, but the fill behavior below is the one reason to read ahead.
Take the 4:5 out of the source
Press the crop button on the card and drag the tall frame over the region that should carry the post — the subject, the product, the headline — then generate from that region. A square source cropped to 4:5 gains room above and below the subject; a 16:9 source cropped to 4:5 gives up its left and right edges. Judge the frame at tile size with the Compare slider before you commit: the feed reads your crop, not your intention.

Why the tall post is the feed post
Instagram accepts a handful of photo shapes, and only two of them live in the ordinary feed as still images: the 1:1 square and the 4:5 portrait. The 4:5 is the taller of the two, and the feed is a vertical instrument — a 1350-pixel column of content versus 1080 is a 35 percent advantage in the only direction the feed scrolls. Three practical consequences:
- More screen time per post: the taller tile holds a scroller's eye longer than the square beside it, and dwell is the metric the ranking reads
- More room for the story: a caption, a second line of product copy, a face plus context — the square forces a choice the portrait does not
- The safe master: 1080 is the width the feed renders at, so an upload at exactly 1080 × 1350 is never downscaled server-side — the quality decision stays yours
- Carousel consistency: every card in a swipe set at 1080 × 1350 reads as one design, not three heights
1080 × 1350 versus its three lookalikes
The four numbers get mixed up in every content calendar, and the differences are not interchangeable. The 1:1 square (1080 × 1080) is the avatar's home and the compact grid tile — the right call for a face on a flat background, the wrong one for a post that wants height. The 16:9 widescreen (1920 × 1080) belongs to video, desktop and the landscape slots of other platforms — a still photo in that shape does not exist in the feed. The 9:16 story (1080 × 1920) is the full-bleed phone column that is permitted in Stories and Reels, not in the feed's photo slots. What is left for the still feed post is this box: 1080 × 1350, the maximum Instagram will display.
That is why a 4:5 post and a square post from the same shoot are two assets, not one. Cropping the 4:5 down to the square loses the top and bottom you framed for the feed; stretching the square up to 4:5 gives the platform's scaler a job with your face in it. When both slots are on the calendar — a feed post and a profile update from the same shoot — generate each from its own box and let the crop decide which pixels survive.
What the file weighs when it lands
A 1080 × 1350 photograph at the default quality of 82 usually sits between 400 and 800 KB as a JPG — larger than its 1:1 sibling because there are 30 percent more pixels in it, and still far below any per-post ceiling the platform has published. A graphics-heavy post — flat color, a layout, a screenshot — collapses toward 150 to 250 KB at quality 60 with no visible difference. If the source was a 24 MP phone photo, the resampling to 1080 wide has already thrown away most of its detail, so the quality slider is a fine adjustment on the last 10 percent of the weight: the crop is the decision that shows up in the feed, the number is the one the upload form checks.

What the page does not do for you
It will not tell you which part of a 3:2 photo should be the 4:5 post, and it will not pad a wide source with a background to fill the tall box — padding is a design decision, and a white band around a feed post reads as a mistake. It also does not cut a square in half to make two 4:5 posts, because that is a crop with opinions, and neither does it build a Reel cover, since the 9:16 video slot is a different asset entirely. What it does is the honest middle: the box is exactly what the feed's maximum photo size is, the crop frame is exactly the part you choose, and the file that comes out is exactly the shape and weight an upload form will accept.
Frequently asked questions
Why post 4:5 instead of the square? The grid looks the same.
It does not, at the size the feed actually shows it: a 4:5 tile is 1350 pixels tall against the square's 1080, so the same column width carries 35 percent more of your image, and the scroller's eye rests on it longer. The grid view is a thumbnail argument; the feed is where the post lives and where the height pays for itself.
My photo is already 1080 × 1080. Do I stretch it into the 4:5 box?
No — stretching a square into 1080 × 1350 turns every face into an oval and every horizontal line into a decision you will regret. The square post is a perfectly good post in its own right; this page is for content that was framed with height in mind. If the subject sits center and you truly want the taller slot, the crop tool on a taller source is the honest route.
I shoot 3:2 landscape on a mirrorless camera. How does it become a feed post?
Two moves. Crop first — the 3:2 frame gives up its left and right edges to become the tall 4:5 region that carries the subject — then generate, and the box scales that region onto 1080 × 1350 with high-quality resampling. The file is a few hundred kilobytes and the composition is the crop you dragged, not one the platform guessed.
Is 1080 × 1350 the same as an Instagram Story size?
No, and the distinction saves a broken upload. Stories and Reels use the full phone column — 1080 wide by 1920 tall, the 9:16 shape. The feed's photo slots accept the square and the 4:5, and this page presets the 4:5, the taller of the two. A 1350-tall file sent to the story slot gets cropped or letterboxed by the app, which is a different frame with a different job.

The .zip lands in the order you added the files, so a calendar named Monday through Sunday stays in that order when you unzip it. The two settings that vary post to post are the crop (every source wants its own) and the quality when a design-heavy post comes in under 200 KB and a photo never does. Everything else — the 1080 × 1350 box, the JPG encode, the metadata stripping of the GPS your phone wrote in — runs identically on every file, on your device.
Does the GPS data in my photo travel with the post?
No. The EXIF block — coordinates, camera model, capture time — is dropped from every output, which is what you want on a post showing where you are, since the story is the point and the coordinates are not. The original on your phone or desktop keeps its metadata untouched, because the file that ran through the page is a new one, not a rewrite.
